Southern Arizona's Ranching Heritage Learning Expedition

Travel with ASM ethnohistorians Diana Hadley, Michael Brescia, and Dale Brenneman and guest scholar, restoration ecologist Conor Flynn, for a day-long exploration of southern Arizona's ranching heritage. Visit Empire Ranch, Babocómari Ranch, Audubon-Whittell Research Ranch and WildEarth Guardians’ State Land Restoration Project.

Learn about:

  • the land-management practices of the Native Americans who occupied the land at the time the Europeans arrived
  • the varieties of livestock that traveled northward with Spanish and Mexican missionaries and settlers
  • the large tracts of rangeland issued through Spanish and Mexican land grants
  • the implications of Spanish water law for landowners today
  • the range management practices of Spanish and Mexican ranchers
  • the lives of southern Arizona’s early homesteaders and pioneer ranchers
  • the variety of range management strategies being practiced today
  • how ranchers have adapted to recent years of severe drought and how they plan to deal with climate change

10:00 a.m. arrive at first stop - Empire Ranch

11:00 a.m. Babocómari Ranch

12:00 p.m. picnic lunch

1:30 p.m. Audubon-Whittell Research Ranch

2:30 p.m. WildEarth Guardians’ State Land Restoration Project

4:30 p.m. depart for Tucson

5:30 p.m. arrive at Arizona State Museum

Wear a hat, comfortable shoes & sunscreen and bring binoculars.
