Sanborn Fire Map of Part of Downtown Tucson

example of an early Tucson map in the collection

Detail of a Sanborn Map & Publishing Company map of downtown Tucson, prepared in April 1883. Note the bullfighting ring, the bowling alley, brewery, billiard hall and Chinese shanties. Building colors are keyed to their construction materials - something of interest to an insurance company: gray is adobe; yellow is wood frame; red/pink is brick. Reproduced from a mounted, colored copy in the Arizona State Museum Archives.
