Sanborn Fire Map of Chinese Block

example of an early Tucson map in the collection

Detail of a Sanborn Map & Publishing Company fire map of downtown Tucson, prepared in April 1883. This portion of the map shows the Chinese block located on what is now the southeast corner of Main and Broadway (north is to the right here; Meyer Street is on the east side of the block). The southwest corner of this block was the location of the Ying On Merchants and Labor Benevolent Association from 1950 to 1968, when it was torn down as part of the Tucson Urban Renewal Project. The history of this block was published by Florence C. Lister and Robert H. Lister, based on the archaeological investigations carried out by the Arizona State Museum as part of the TUR Project (Anthropological Papers of the University of Arizona Number 52) Reproduced from a mounted, colored copy in the Arizona State Museum Archives.
