pithouse cross sections

Cross-section drawing of a prehistoric Mogollon culture pithouse at the Bear Ruin, near Forestdale, on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, excavated by the University of Arizona Archaeological Field School in 1939 and 1940. This section shows various architectural features including a bench (g), a charred log in a floor pit (n), a floor pit (m), and a deflector (f) to keep air coming in the ventilator shaft (e) from blowing directly on the fire in the hearth (h). Probably drafted by Brigham Arnold.
