Bernard Fontana in the Field

Bernard Fontana interviewing Frank Miguel

Bernard L. Fontana, the Arizona State Museum ethnologist at the time, interviewing Frank Miguel about Tohono O'odham (Papago) history at San Xavier around 1974. Note the calendar stick that Mr. Miguel is holding. Such sticks have a symbol carved on them for each year, which serves as a mnemonic device for its owner in recalling important events that took place in his village.
