Visions
and Voices
Nazhone Paul Yazzie I come from a great people who have over the years adapted and changed to the ever-changing world. The Navajo, like many other tribes, have suffered many trials and tribulations, but we are a people with strong hearts able to withstand the dominant pressures of this world. I value our integrity and I respect the cultural values instilled within us. I have lived in the Navajo Nation all of my life. I am glad I grew up there where it is beautiful in every way--the land, the trees, and the animals. I was brought up in a small community where my parents taught me about life and how to go about it as a Navajo to be proud of our people and our uniqueness. I live now in Tucson, where I find it every different from the Navajo Nation: stores are very accessible, pizza is delivered to your doorsteps, and I have e-mail. City life is noisy, too fast and so much to worry about. Education will help me get through life and it will eventually lead me to my profession, where it will be in constant use. Education builds character, respect, and edifies the mind. It was told to me, from various individuals back home on the Navajo Nation, education will help create who you are so that one day you will be a leader to help others in their pursuits at living, and to be an inspiration to others so that they may obtain their goals. I plan to enter a medical school where I will go to get much training in order to become a good physician. I plan on going back to the Navajo Nation to improve health care and promote wellness with mind, body, and soul. I would like to create a sense of friendship every time I enter a room where my patient is glad that a fellow Native American understands Indian people. I also want to continue providing sufficient care and promote advancement in medical technology on the reservations. Tribal affiliation: Navajo |
