Visions
and Voices
Lola Burnette Being tribally mixed with the Hopi and White Mountain Apache tribes, I have been constantly learning about my heritage. I've lived on both the Apache and Hopi Reservations trying to understand both cultures. I'm still learning to this day. I grew up on the Hopi Reservation where things weren't exactly great. I've had to overcome financial problems and stay focused to be where I am today. When I was in elementary school, I decided I wanted to go to college and I never let anything or anyone get in the way of that dream. Because of the hard work and determination, I have finished my second year of college. I feel that American Indians are portrayed in art in a negative manner making us all look like savages. Indians have been portrayed as lazy, drunken savages. This has been the stereotype Europeans have given the world. These stereotypes need to be changed, but the harsh reality is that there is a lot of ignorance and as long as ignorance thrives, stereotypes will prevail. I would like Indians portrayed in a positive manner. More than anything, we need positive role models that will carry a positive image for Native Americans. The media needs to focus on the positive. not the negative aspects of Native American cultures. One thing the general public needs to know is that all Native Americans aren't the same. Each tribe differs, each has distinct languages, religion, and customs. An education is very important. In order to get a good job and security for the future, a college education is needed. Advanced education would greatly benefit all Native Americans because they'd be making their own money and supporting their families. Also it would help to erase the stereotypes that Native Americans are lazy. Tribal Affiliation: White Mountain Apache/Hopi |
