The exhibit, during the fall of 1998, consisted of portraits by Michael S. Shipman, personal statements from the subjects, and contemporary Native American arts and crafts. Michael's sensitive portrayals of Indian people are realistic and capture the essence of their spirit. Many Indians feel he represents them with respect and truth. His drawings, along with quotes from the models about contemporary issues, educational experiences and their hopes and dreams for the future, will be featured at the museum and later in traveling exhibits. "Visions and Voices," consisting of over 100 portraits of U of A students, faculty and staff as well as students from St Gregory College Preparatory School, was on exhibit during 1998. Native American music with an American Indian narrating quotes from the models' observations provided an audio background for the visitor. Through exposure at different locations around the state, such as tribal centers and reservation schools, the exhibit encouraged education and spread appreciation of diversity to a wide audience. |
