I fell asleep on the couch with the TV on. I woke up because the dog wanted to go out and looked at the television and there was a movie on that I didn't want to watch. So I switched the channel--the movie was on the next channel, and I switched again and it was on the next channel, and I realized it was not a movie.

Well, this country has always been called a melting pot. I don't think it's a melting pot at all. I think it's a big pot of oil and vinegar and water, and there's all these different layers. But the funny thing is, you stir it up it blends pretty good. We're stirred up real well right now. We're blending up pretty nice. I mean I have my own prejudices, and I'm willing to overlook them right now.

One of the things I've thought about is the fact that people in Ireland and in parts of Africa and, of course, in the Middle East, that people all around the world live the way the folks in New York lived that day, every single day of their lives. And we've been made to really join with the rest of the world in some ways in understanding what it means to live with a certain lack of safety, with a certain understanding of threat, you know, with the anthrax mailings going on. And there's just sense of, "Could it happen to me?"
