Galvez comments: "A quincero is a boy's 15th birthday celebration, similar to a quinceañera. Although I'd seen dozens of quinceañeras, this was the first time I had ever seen a boy honored with this type of ceremony."

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, ASM proudly displayed Galvez' work in an intimate exhibition entitled RITUALES: Mexican-American Rites and Rituals. His photographs celebrate various Mexican-American ceremonies such as baptisms, First Communions, quinceañeras, weddings, home altars, graduations, naturalization ceremonies and even low rider competitions.

Of his numerous subjects, the photos closest to his heart are those that capture Latino culture and preserve his Chicano heritage. Galvez' work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States and abroad throughout his thirty year career.

Galvez' project, VATOS, is a stunning book that combines his photographs with the poetry of Luis Alberto Urrea.

Galvez himself was on hand September 29 at Arizona State Museum's Hispanic Heritage Month-end celebration, a Gran Tardeada, to discuss his works and sign books.

The exhibition ran
September 3 to November 3, 2002
