Paths of Life
Diné—The Navajo:
Dibe iina at'e—Sheep is Life
For more than three centuries the Navajo have been a pastoral people. Their flocks of sheep and herds of goats, horses, and cattle were the mainstay of the Navajo economy
until the 1950s.
But, raising sheep and horses is more than just a
way to make a living. The pastoral lifestyle is an important part of the Navajo cultural identity. Animals, the land, and
the seasonal jouneys to new pastures remain central concepts of the Navajo experience.
