Two-Faced Rugs

“Besides a plain over/under weave used in most rugs, Navajo weavers also use a variety of other techniques.  The two-faced weave appears differently on each side of the rug.  As with all other rugs it is woven by one person from one side of the loom.  It is actually a variant of a 3/1 twill weave.  Instead of the usual over/under structure, however, the yarns interlace over three/under one or under three/over one, making a thicker rug with two distinct faces.  Despite their durability and appealing appearance, such rugs are unusual and only certain weavers make them.” —Ann Hedlund
