“Blue Canyon Transition”
Date: 1994
Artist: Larry Yazzie, 1955-1995
Clan: Naakaii dine’é, born for Kiyaa’áanii (Mexican People, Towering House People)
Size: 62" x 36"
Count: Raised outline weave, 38 wefts/inch

“Larry Yazzie learned to weave from female relatives after returning from a stint in the Army. Often he would talk about ‘painting with yarn.’ A prolific young weaver and one of the first men to be publicly recognized as a contemporary weaver, his death in 1995 left a legacy continued now by a growing number of male weavers.” —Ann Hedlund

“Larry was really innovative—he started his own asymmetric designs. The distinctive weave he used is called ‘raised outline,’ because the threads at the edge of each design pass over two warps, not one, and so they bump up.” —Barbara Ornelas
