Teec Nos Pos rug
Date: 1986
Artist: Bessie Jane Benally, born 1930
Size: 12' 7" x 6' 5"
Count: 44 wefts/inch

“This rug shows strong influence from Oriental carpets that Navajos would have seen in books and sales catalogues. These stars and medallions around the border appear in countless pile-weave carpets. Although the weaver's approach appears bold and contemporary, she herself is a very traditional Navajo woman.

“Bessie Jane Benally often repeats a pattern of eight-pointed stars in her rugs. Not only are these in Oriental carpets, but in American quilts and Rio Grande Spanish-American blankets. Some weavers tend to keep closely to one style throughout of their lives; others may vary their choices from rug to rug, or from one period in their life to another.” —Ann Hedlund
