Trincheras sites are found in southern Arizona and New Mexico in the U.S. and in northern Sonora and Chihuahua in Mexico. The highest concentration of sites is found in Sonora with Arizona having the second highest concentration. Sites were built by several different prehistoric culture groups including the Hohokam, Trincheras, Rio Sonora and Mogollon cultures. Trincheras sites tend to be located on hills or low mountains of volcanic rock near rivers.
