"PAPAGO ACTIVITY'S" QUILT BLOCKS:
GOLDIE'S LENS ON RESERVATION LIFE

Back to Gallery

Goldie embroidered captions on the the blocks for her Papago Activity's (sic) Quilt to interpret for the viewer the scenes she was depicting. Writing in the first person, in simple words, she lent her voice to those O'odham whom she rendered going about their daily lives.

Historic photos, courtesy of the Arizona Historical SocietyOpens in a new window and the Arizona State Museum, indicate that Goldie was accurately "sewing what she saw," even if her perspective was that of an outside observer of rather than participant in the cultural activities she depicted.
