The BLM transferred 94.8 acres of patented land to Santa Cruz County for a new county complex in 1987. A condition of the transfer required the County to comply with federal environmental laws regarding identification of historic properties (both prehistoric and historic) prior to undertaking any construction. The property was initially surveyed and tested by the Arizona State Museum Cultural Resource Division in 1987, with more in-depth testing by Cultural and Environmental Systems, Inc. in 1991 and full-scale excavation of threatened sites by Statistical Research, Inc. in 1996. One prehistoric site, El Macayo, and a historic National Guard Encampment, were recorded and investigated on the property.
