Southwest Indian Art Fair Juried Competition

About the 2003 Jurors

The Arizona State Museum Southwest Indian Art Fair (SWIAF) offers recognition and awards to artists whose work is judged to be of exceptional merit. The goals of the jury process are to support excellence in the arts and to offer all participating artists opportunity for recognition by leading professional figures.

This year an invited panel of expert jurors selected artists for over 30 distinct awards of excellence. Jurors were selected by a committee composed of ASM /SWIAF staff. As with past fairs, the 2003 SWIAF jury was dominated by Native artists and reflected a cross section of cultural perspectives and artistic disciplines.

Delbridge Honanie, Hopi, from Second Mesa, brought his award-winning perspective in the art of katsina doll carving. Honanie has demonstrated his knowledge and skill in carving by winning top awards in several past SWIAF competitions as well as honors in Eight Northern Pueblo events, Indian Market in Santa Fe, NM, and The Heard Museum competitions.

Terrill Goseyun, Apache, has also won top awards in painting and drawing at numerous venues including the prestigious top award in last year's SWIAF.

Holly Young, Curator of Collections at Pueblo Grande Museum, brought an important outside perspective to the jury process. Young has served as juror at numerous other professional venues prior to her assistance at this year's SWIAF.

Carrie Ortiz, Ojibwa, has a strong background as an artist working in a number of media. Her expertise in judging creative developments among the youth entries was based on years of experience of working with Native children.

Hartman Lomawaima, Interim Director at ASM, Hopi, selected the winner of the The Museum Director's Award. Lomawaima was responsible for initiating this new award for the 2003 competition.

Suzanne Griset, Head of Collections at ASM, combined her knowledge of Collections needs with expertise in many crafts to help select this year's purchase awards. Assisting in the task of selecting work of exceptional merit for ASM Collections was Lisa Zimmerman. Lisa's eye for visual quality is well respected at the Museum.

Arizona State Museum offers thanks to the 2003 SWIAF Jury for their commitment to sustain the high standards SWIAF has set for itself. This effort also would not have been possible without the high quality of work that was offered for review by our participating artists and the dedicated support of our many community and business sponsors. Our congratulations to all the winning artists and to all submitting artists for making this competition a challenging and meaningful event.
