The Pottery Detectives: Resources for Educators
Introduction

Dear Educator:

Map of Prehistoric Southwest CulturesThe Pottery Detectives exhibition (March 2003 - September 2004 at ASM and November 2004 - May 2005 at the Mesa Southwest Museum) introduced visitors to the enduring art of American Indian pottery in the American Southwest, as well as the scientific methods archaeologists use to “decode” their ancient secrets.

The following pages provide information originally designed to prepare teachers and students for a visit, and include suggestions for pre-visit lessons, vocabulary, a bibliography, on-line resources and post-visit lesson ideas. Although the exhibition is over, these resources can still be used to teach about ancient Arizona (the Hohokam, Mogollon and Ancestral Pueblo) and early Southwest ceramics.
