Ethnological Textile Collections

The Museum has roughly 3550 textiles including approximately 400 Navajo textiles, ranging from the Classic Period (1850-1860) to the 1990s, with heaviest concentrations in the early 20th century. Other Southwestern textiles include Puebloan blankets, mantas, kilts and sashes. A major collection of close to 1,000 textiles from Northwest Mexico—including Tarahumara, Mayo and Tepehuan—was deposited at the Museum in the late 1970s. This is the largest collection of its kind anywhere.
