The Archives curates over 6,000 original field and site maps and report
illustrations. These
are a tremendous resource for any reexamination of previous projects as
well as predicting site densities and locations for new research projects.
This body of documentation as a whole comprises one of the nation's richest
and most comprehensive records of Southwestern prehistory and archaeological
investigations. Rapid population growth and both urban and agricultural
development in the Southwest have destroyed a significant number of the
prehistoric and historic sites in the region. Many exist now solely as
museum collections, photographs, fieldnotes and these types of maps, along
with the records maintained by the Museum's Site Survey Office and the
AZSITE consortium.
