What is SCAP?

Sponsored by an anonymous donor for Earthwatch Institute, the Student Challenge Awards Program is a merit-based scholarship that enables students aged 16-18 to go out in the field with regular Earthwatch volunteers and experience what it's like to do relevant scientific research. According to the Earthwatch website, "[SCAP] offers students....gifted in the arts and humanities an opportunity to spend two to three intensive weeks during the summer at a scientific research station. The aim is to excite the students' imagination, expand their potential, and stimulate their curiosity about science and technology."

Among the SCAP program's goals is to give students a chance to:

  • Participate in hands-on scientific research alongside professionals
  • Learn how science and technology advance our understanding of the world
  • Travel to a different geographical area
  • Get to know a talented group of peers and scientific mentors
  • Discover the correlation between arts and sciences

In addition to providing room and board - in our case, our two-week stay at the Navajo dormitory in Winslow, Arizona with the research team - Earthwatch also pays for the SCAP students' travel expenses. For several of our team members, this was their first time on an airplane, and maybe even their first time away from home. An exciting experience, to be sure, but definitely worth it.
