Video About ASM (in Spanish)Transcription / Translation View Vídeo Hello! I’m Gilberto Laroque, member of the Southern Arizona Attractions Alliance. Today we’re on the campus of the University of Arizona. We’re going to visit one of the most wonderful museums in the Southwest, the Arizona State Museum. Let’s go! Today we’re here inside part of the Arizona State Museum. The museum was founded in 1893; it’s been here on campus for over 100 years. The museum is dedicated to the study of anthropology—the study of the different cultures from all over the Southwest. This exhibit focuses on pottery from different groups. This part of the exhibition here comes from the Hohokam culture. For over 2,000 years various Indian groups have lived here in the United States and especially in the Southwest. This exhibition is the largest in the world and has about 20,000 pieces of pottery, covering more than 2000 years of our culture here in the Southwest of the United States. Let’s see more of the museum. Here we are on the other side of the museum, in an exhibit called “Paths of Life”. This exhibit covers the different cultures of the Indians of the Southwest. Here, from Mexico to Arizona we can learn about cultures and societies of the Hohokam, the Yaqui, the Hopi, the Tohono O’odham—all the different peoples who have lived here in the Southwest. You can spend hours and hours viewing all the wonderful exhibits in this museum. What is also so interesting is that the museum is a laboratory where the most prominent scientists in the US study anthropology. The most interesting thing is that the museum offers programs for children of all ages, so they can come to study and learn more about anthropology. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The museum opens at noon on Sundays. [Editor's note: The museum is not currently open on Sundays.] We are located at the entrance to the University of Arizona. I hope you will come visit this wonderful museum , which is free to all. I hope to see you here at the Arizona State Museum. |
